Acrylic vs MDF Signs: Which Material is Right for Your Business?
Two of the most popular materials for laser-cut business signage are cast acrylic and MDF (medium-density fibreboard). Both cut cleanly, take paint well, and can produce sharp, professional results — but they behave differently and suit different applications. Here’s how to choose.
At a Glance
| Cast Acrylic | MDF / Timber | |
|---|---|---|
| Durability | Excellent — impact-resistant, won’t warp | Good indoors — moisture-sensitive |
| Finish options | 20+ stock colours, mirror, clear, frosted, painted, UV printed | Raw, painted, stained, veneered |
| Cut edge | Flame-polished, glass-clear | Clean but porous — sealing needed for paint |
| Outdoor use | Yes (UV-stable cast acrylic) | No — swells and deteriorates |
| Weight | Light–medium (density ~1.19 g/cm³) | Heavier (density ~0.75 g/cm³ for 18mm) |
| Cost | Medium–high | Low–medium |

Cast Acrylic: The Professional Signage Standard
Cast acrylic (sometimes called Perspex or Plexiglass) is the go-to material for professional business signage. Here’s why:
Colour choices
We stock over 20 acrylic colours including opaque whites and blacks, vivid solids, and mirror finishes in gold, silver, rose gold and bronze. Each colour is consistent all the way through, so even if the cut edge is visible, it looks intentional and clean.
Flame-polished edges
When laser-cut, cast acrylic edges melt slightly and re-solidify — leaving a smooth, glossy, glass-like edge. No sanding or finishing required. This is why acrylic signs look premium straight off the machine.
Durability
Acrylic is UV-stable, won’t warp with temperature changes, and resists most cleaning chemicals. 3mm acrylic is surprisingly rigid for small signs; 5mm and above is solid enough for large wall installations.
Finish upgrades
Acrylic can be left as-is, spray-painted to any Pantone/RAL colour, or UV-printed face-on for full-colour imagery. This makes it the most versatile material for custom signage.
When to use acrylic
- Reception letters and logos
- Retail signage and wayfinding
- Office door plates and nameplates
- Awards and display pieces
- Outdoor-facing signs (use UV-stable grades)
MDF: Affordable and Versatile for Decorative Work
MDF and timber cut beautifully — the laser produces a characteristic light brown scorched edge that many customers love for rustic or warm aesthetic projects.
Cost-effectiveness
MDF is significantly cheaper than acrylic, making it ideal for high-quantity decorative pieces, props, display stands and layered artwork where cost per piece matters.
Paint and finish
Uncoated MDF is highly porous and absorbs paint quickly. For a smooth painted finish, cut edges need a sealer coat first. We can handle this in our painting process — just specify when ordering.
Natural timber option
We also cut Tasmanian Oak, Bamboo, Birch ply and other natural timbers. These give a warm, premium feel that MDF can’t match — ideal for restaurant menus, café signage, wooden gifts and architectural features.
Limitations
MDF is not suitable for outdoor or high-humidity environments. It swells, delaminates and loses its shape when exposed to moisture. For any outdoor application, choose acrylic.
When to use MDF or timber
- Event signage and wedding décor
- Layered art and sculptural pieces
- Props and display stands
- Engraved gifts and keepsakes
- Interior decorative signage in dry environments
Thickness Guide
Both materials come in a range of thicknesses. Here’s what we recommend by application:
- 3mm — Door signs, nameplates, small decorative pieces, flat-mounted letters
- 5mm — Mid-size reception letters (80–150mm height), sturdy shelf labels
- 10mm — Large letters (150–300mm), feature walls, dimensional depth signs
- 15–20mm — 3D floating logos, large-format standoff letters, bold dimensional statements
The Bottom Line
Choose acrylic if your sign will be visible as a centrepiece, needs to last years, or will be in a commercial or outdoor environment.
Choose MDF or timber if you’re creating decorative or event pieces, keeping costs down on volume runs, or want a natural warm aesthetic.
